TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug
A shadow market for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns
However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of members, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at residence.
Within moments of entering one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Within these communities, posts display black plastic packages with postal service labels, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
